After completion of this course, students will satisfy the sophomore research requirement.
Students will study foundations of applied mathematics and pure mathematics and computer science, programming (in Python, Matlab, Mathematica, Excel and other languages). This knowledge will also be very beneficial when taking advanced mathematics and computer science courses in the school. Students will be trained in the process of selection and contacting potential mentors in the areas of research that interest them (such as, for example, applied computer science, pure computer science, quantum computing, computational quantum physics, computational biochemistry, computational medicine, quantitative economics, mathematical modeling for sciences, numbers theory and cryptography, etc). Students will also be trained in essential skills for passing the interview (for a volunteer research assistant position) with a college professor of their choice. Students will be individually couched and will receive a thorough guidance through every stage of the process of selecting the area of research, receiving individualized training for the area of research, contacting professors, passing the interview, obtaining more advanced training in the research laboratory, writing a research proposal, completing their research (during Junior year), and applying for scholarships (during Senior year). It is expected that students who enroll in the research program will complete the three-year sequence.
